Marion MONNET (Université de Bourgogne) présentera son article "The Drivers of Gender Discrimination : Evidence from an Online Experiment with Secondary Education Teachers" (avec Philippe COLO et Étienne DAGORN).

Résumé :
Teachers' gender biases and their effect on students' outcomes have been largely documented in the literature. This paper reports the results of an online experiment designed to assess the extent to which these biases stem from gender-based discrimination and to examine two of its potential drivers: teachers' gender preferences and gender beliefs. A total of 1,898 teachers evaluated randomly assigned fictitious school transcripts in which gender was varied. Teachers' gender preferences were measured through a series of dictator games, followed by an Implicit Association Test (IAT) to assess gender beliefs. Our results indicate that while teachers do not appear to have gender preferences, they do hold gender beliefs. We propose a conceptual framework linking these two aspects in a way that allows to predict gender discrimination. Using evaluations from about 19,000 transcripts, we find no evidence of gender-based discrimination across a wide range of transcript profiles. These findings suggest that gender disclosure alone does not trigger discrimination and that such behaviours are more likely to arise in direct student-teacher interactions.
